Dieting, Food, and Embracing Dinner

Over the last few months I gave up all my ambitions of losing weight.  I quit watching what I was eating and began cooking food that was fresh and less processed.  I embraced butter, real sour cream, and the occasional dabble into the art of fried food.

I’ve lost 10 pounds.

To be completely honest I did give up fast food – mainly because I saw Food, Inc. and realized, well, just watch it yourself and you’ll understand.

It’s been rather empowering to quit worrying so much about food and more about quality, taste, and the fellowship it involves.  I cook what I want and feel good knowing my family is eating real food not real food-like substances.

Now, I’m certainly not perfect by any means. I still do frozen pizza on the nights that I have class really late and I refuse to give up Diet Coke.  I haven’t made a total transformation to all homemade and organic, but I’m getting there…slowly.  I’m taking steps – and those steps are much easier without the worry of my weight hanging in the balance.

My lack of dieting has allowed me to look at my cookbooks a little differently, too.  Now I don’t necessarily look for calories and fat content, but instead look for different ingredients and interesting foods.  I’m more motivated to try new foods or cooking techniques with my thoughts racing about their flavor and quality – not their points or numbers.

It’s exciting to think of the possibilities – how I can incorporate local, fresh food into something that can feed the body and the soul – that will allow me to redefine my relationship with food into one of nourishment, flavor, and appreciation.

Congratulations on your weight loss and new attitude toward food! We try to eat the same way; the only thing I'm unsure about is dairy–there are so many vastly different opinions about it. But overall, it's just common sense to me to eat food as close to how God made it as possible!
